About the Primary Department

The Maputo International College Primary Department provides a structured and holistic learning environment for students from Grade 1 to Grade 6. Through the Cambridge Curriculum, learners develop strong academic foundations while building responsibility, discipline, confidence, leadership and the skills required for continued success in High School.

Primary education at MIC is organised into two learning structures: self-contained classes for the early grades and departmentalised learning as students progress through Primary School.

Advisory teachers guide students through the major subjects, providing consistency, close support and a strong foundation during the early Primary years.

Promotion & Retention

Students achieving a general average of 60% or above are promoted to the next grade level.

A grade of 59% or below is considered failing. Performance in Mathematics, English and Science is particularly important when determining progression.

Evaluation

Examination Policy

Quizzes and term examinations support academic evaluation.
Term examinations are conducted at the end of each term.
Students missing an examination for a valid reason may receive a special parallel test.

Learning extends beyond the classroom through leadership, sports,

educational activities and additional academic support.

Student Body Council

Developing discipline, leadership, service and cooperation while encouraging students to participate positively in school and community life.

Sports & Activities

Sports form part of the regular school programme, supporting physical development, teamwork, participation and discipline.

Camping, Field Trips & Outings

In-campus school camping is available to Grades 4–6, while educational field trips and outings may be organised when appropriate.

Afternoon Learning Support

Additional academic support may be provided from 14:00–16:00 for students who require extra assistance in meeting class-level standards.

Parent & Student Guidelines

Essential information to support a safe, organised and successful Kindergarten experience.

Attendance & Punctuality

Regular attendance is essential for student success. Parents should inform the teacher and Principal in advance when an absence is necessary.

Students arriving after 07:35 should report to the Principal's Office before entering class. The school gate closes at 07:45.

School Uniform

Students are expected to arrive in complete school uniform and observe the school's dress requirements.

Homework During Prolonged Absence

Parents planning an extended absence should contact the Principal in advance so teachers can arrange appropriate academic work.

Bus Transportation

Students using the school bus service must be formally registered. Route and schedule enquiries should be directed to the school administration.

Personal Items & Mobile Phones

Electronic games, toys and trading cards are not permitted. Mobile phone use during class is not allowed and students are encouraged to bring only essential personal belongings.

Communication with Parents

Parents should regularly check reminder notebooks, circulars and school letters and return signed communications whenever required.

Lost & Found

Lost items should be reported to the teacher immediately. Unclaimed items remaining at the end of the school year may be donated to charity.

Parking & Student Collection

Parents and drivers should park safely and follow the designated routes and teacher guidance during student collection and dismissal.

Required School Materials

Parents are responsible for providing the notebooks, stationery, examination paper and other learning materials required for each grade. All notebooks should be properly covered and labelled.

Books

Required textbooks are purchased by parents through the MIC Administration Office. Students are expected to care properly for all books and workbooks.

Student Conduct & Discipline

Students are expected to follow school rules and demonstrate respectful conduct. Repeated or serious disciplinary cases are addressed progressively by teachers, the Principal and the School Director.
